My 11 Second Club - August Entry

After being a member for about 4 years and commenting and learning now and then, I entered the 11 second  club August competition for the first time. It was difficult managing time to animate the shot with so much work I was already busy in but I must say, THAT is the most fun I had animating. This is it. My true love. Animation.
I learnt so much from the community. Wonderful constructive comments and suggestions on my shot, its crazy! I am nowhere right now but I am learning and 11secondclub.com is one of the best place to.

Below is the shot I animated. Couldn't make it at very top but its top 20 for now :-)

Horse Walk Cycle

Tried my hands on a quadruped walk cycle. Horse being the most difficult they say.... Need to refine it yet. WIP.

Thief

Before I go further with my 'Journey so far' series, here is a little animation I did in my free time. Trying to keep it in shape :-) Hope you all like it.

Journey so far

Don't know where to begin. It has been almost a year since I last wrote. Not that I was busy, I was...just ... involved. In so many things. Since last year I am the Co - founder and Creative Director at Headquarter Studios. Yes, we started an Animation studio. I want to share the whole story, to tell you all about the adventure of starting and running a Studio, a business, and it will take me ages to write so much. I don't even know if it will be useful to anyone, but I guess it will be to me. So expect the coming articles to be about this journey so far, of an artist handling the bitter side of earning bread and butter and struggling to keep the passion of an Animator. Don't worry I'm not gonna write a kind of self help book there are many about running a business or about being a better artist or person or being successful. Hell I'm not successful yet. Just the journey... and not the destination.
We have done a lot of work these past year as a studio. Some what we liked and some to keep the studio running. Some I'd like to show you all and some I feel embarrassed to share. But anyways, you can check our website (under construction, so expect some bugs) www.hqstudios.in and our facebook page here.
I will post some work here too which are worth writing about and telling a story. Ah! Again I don't know why I am and will be writing about this. But if you wanna know how some artists who don' t know nothing about running a business, do so, then stay tuned, you are gonna find some real funny and stupid incidents to laugh upon and maybe get something out of every story. ( unless my colleagues kill me for sharing a bit too much) See ya soon!

Danny's Dream

Here is a project I was a part of when I was in Fatballoon Animations, Chennai. I love the concept and the look of it. It was immense fun animating. Below is the list of shots I animated and the rest was animated by Anand Kumar.

Going Home :-)

Inspired from J.B. Monge, this is something I tried. Painting Fantasy Life is what I enjoy most. Hobbits, Goblins, All kinds of Fairies, Elves, Dragons, Wizards...oh! I know I haven't painted as much as I am saying but its coming. That is the world for me :-)
I used a BIG wacom Cintiq fo this one. We got a new one in our office and I thought of trying my hands on it. Its AWESOMEE!
Going home. ... Going...home ^_^

Itcha

This is a Title Animation we did at our studio for a TV Series. I am responsible for the animation. There is a lot we could do more but the director was in a hurry it seems :-)
I am posting this just for fun here. . .

I also designed this character, here is the Final paint :-)

Digital Painting competition 2, My entry - THE DOCKHOUSE

Once again we had a Digital Painting competition at Animation Conclave . It was Fun. We had only 2 hours to complete the painting but of course, nobody could. It was very late night so we dicided to give it more time and complete it the next day. Had great discussions on the WIPs and fun painting it. Please check out all the entries on the Conclave
This is mine.

Batman

My favorite Superhero has always been Batman. I used to read, and I still do, the comics since I was very young and then I was fascinated by the 1992 cartoon series that used to air on cartoon network. The intensity of the show was not exactly for the kids and so many didn't like it. But it was my favorite. And of course you cannot ever forget the Music by Danny Elfman....ahh! those days!

Sheriff Boulding

Its been long since I posted anything. I have been too busy with stuff and many exciting things are happening. I will surely tell you guys as and when they happen :-). But for now, I wanted to post this character design I did for my friend Tanmay as he wanted a Casual character to Model. I don't know if he has finished it yet but if he did, then I'll post the 3D version too.
This is just a basic wash in PS. Ain't he too cute to be a Sheriff? .. hehe ....That was the general idea anyway ;-)

Stage Dance

Hiya guys. Hows it going? watched the new 'Despicable Me' trailer yet? Its AWESOME! Check it out. Can't wait to see it.
Here is what I've done recently. A sloppy dance. I know I know. I need much more Exaggeration and Staging in the stage. Ya i missed on that but it just came to happen. Anyway check it out guys.

Please comment because I think there is a lot to criticize..he he :-)

Gurhal - A documentary

Today I went through my blog editing and updating it and I realized that I haven't uploaded my first ever serious documentary here. This Documentary earned me many compliments on film making at the start of my career.
Its a documentary on a traditional Jaggery making factory from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.

I love travelling and roaming around anywhere I can reach. One day me and my two friends set out with my Handycam just to shoot out the beautiful nature that surrounds Kolhapur. On the road I saw this GURHAL and it struck me in my mind to see exactly how it works. I had the camera and so we decided to make a documentary on it.
Everything is done ON THE SPOT. NO planning, no Pre Production, no storyboarding, no script. I shot all the sequences and directed as and how it came to my mind. My friend tanmay did the hosting and Yogesh provided a back support (eating Jaggery) . We had excellent interactions with the workmen and were treated marvelously.
I can never forget their excitement of being in the camera. they were frequently asking that are they gonna be seen on TV. I told them this is a student project but I don't think they got very much out of it. They were still happy.
I did the editing in one day and we did the voice recording and synching in a night. Great experience.
It is a film we did in the very start of my career. too many improvements to do, but still it is a benchmark for me and I am proud to show this to you all. It is in Marathi language. Sorry for that but the villagers don't know any other language so we had to speak in Marathi.
hope you will enjoy this sweet journey through sugarcanes.

Flipbook

Nah! I am not writing about the software...though its one of the best tool I used.
Flipbook tempts me to draw and animate more and more...and its so easy. Here are some tests I did and the first ever complete walk cycle in 2d...haha! I did those before but this seems a bit complete...tell me how you like it.

Realize....before its too late.

The prying mind had rested in the opening of communication session at Saturday. It was yet another new, interesting, inimitable and useful activity held by Vrushali Mam, administration, Id Animation & Arts Studio School. Similar to other faculties, she does not only handle her department but also holds student’s communication lessons.

But my heart was not in the amusement. It was announced that this is the Last communication session to be held and I can see sheer disappointment on mam’s face, all because us.

The story goes like this – Communication sessions were initiated when we started our animation course, one and a half year ago. We were doing an assortment of activities to enhance our communication skills all held my Vrushali mam. We learned to speak. We learned to listen. We learned what teamwork is and that is why we perform well as a team now. We gathered the courage to present ourselves in front of unknown people and sharpened ourselves with the language of communication world, English. There was always something new in the sessions and every time it was a surprise to attend. I remember the excitement and a bit of a fear I used to feel before the sessions. I myself was a very introvert and a bit reclusive kind of person and I know how much I opened up because of these sessions. I never had that kind of stage exposure before. I never spoke about myself in front of unknown people before and now I know that I can do all of it confidently. We were being trained, till now, with an additional and a very obligatory weapon called Communication.

But as our other workload increased with the training, the frequency of these sessions decreased. We started being very busy and gave these sessions second priority to what we were doing. We were not paying much attention to the significant involvement in this process. The assignments were not completed on time or abandoned totally by us. To some extent we evaded these practices, growing heavy with the work which was already sitting on our head. Many a times, Mam pushed us and tried to convey the importance of communication and many a times we fell down. On the other hand, mam was finding new and interesting ways to teach and improve our communication but we were not ready ourselves to get them. She researched a lot; she made new assignments which would have been of help. We followed them but again ignored some of her efforts. It was like someone was trying to feed us the cake of knowledge and we were not accepting it. We were not coming on time to class and we were taking her words lightly. We were not respecting her constant endeavors. That is why Mam was tired and decided to give up and to stop the wasted, unaccounted efforts.

But if I go behind the psychology of this approach towards the sessions and towards Mam, I will never come to the conclusion that we don’t respect Mam as such. Yes, we are mistaken to take it lightly and didn’t feel the tension and pressure towards the sessions. We were more opened up with Mam. We behaved more free & friendly, and that is why we had a soft corner over there. Somehow our mentality had shaped with ease and intrepidness. But we didn’t realize her efforts towards the sessions. Maybe all of this sounds a bit inconsistent, but that’s what, I think, the reality is. We never did this intentionally, but the mistake is done.

In this Last session we realized our mistake. And for the oil in fire, I came late. Mam has been close to tears when she spoke this out at last. It was obvious for her to be disappointed and to get irritated. I sat there horrified, stunned and with a flame of guilt in my happy stomach. I realized that if you are not respecting the deeds one is doing, then you don’t respect the person itself. We never meant to do that. But the harm has been done and other, junior, students are also going to suffer because of us. They will not get the fruits of these sessions that we, to some measures, received. All I wanted then was to convince Mam to continue those sessions at least for the innocents. Why should they undergo the distressing consequences because of us. Why they have to be deprived of this important learning when we know that they cannot survive in the industry without the communication skills.

I am sorry (I know I said it thousand times before…….but still…) for what happened and really hope that she will continue the sessions, with or without us.
